Mental health confab set May 21

Pueblo Chieftain (CO) - 4/23/2014

April 23--The third annual Mental Health in the Sangres Symposium is scheduled May 21 in the Occhiato Center at Colorado State University-Pueblo.

The Mental Health Integration Committee and numerous local sponsors want the public to take part in the daylong event, which will include a wide variety of presentations aimed at reducing the stigma of mental health, especially in children.

Among the speakers will be David Granirer, author of "The Happy Neurotic: How Fear and Angst can Lead to Happiness and Success," and founder of Stand up for Mental Health, a program that teaches individuals who have mental illnesses to use stand-up comedy as a way of building confidence and fighting public stigma.

There will be a session on Art from Ashes, a program intended to empower youth by providing programs that encourage health and engender hope through creative expression, human connection and transformation.

Other session topics will include Gestalt and horses, taming trauma using cognitive behavioral therapy, neurobiology or play therapy, laughter for health and healing and others.

The cost for the symposium is $35 and covers lunch.
