Monitor - 7/17/2018

July 17--The Boys and Girls Clubs in Hidalgo County will offer mental health services to clubgoers beginning this fall.

Representatives from the clubs in Hidalgo County -- Edinburg, Mission, McAllen, Pharr and Weslaco -- will meet Thursday morning at the Boys and Girls Club of Pharr to announce the new initiative, dubbed Youth and Family Support Services, according to a news release from the club in Edinburg.

Officials there will provide details about the new program.

Guest speakers will include State District Judge Renee R. Betancourt, who heads the Hidalgo County Juvenile Court, Raquel Rosales, a community relations coordinator at Tropical Texas Behavioral Health, State Rep. Terry Canales, D-Edinburg, and Mayra Avila, a licensed social worker and senior coordinator of counseling at South Texas College.

The clubs offer afterschool and summer programs that emphasize academic success, healthy lifestyles and character, the release stated. In Edinburg alone, the club has played an integral role in the community since 1969. It currently provides daily programs and services to more than 18,000 young people.
